Department of History Education UVRI (Veteran University of the Republic of Indonesia) Makassar in collaboration with ASPENSI (Association of Indonesian Scholars of History Education) Bandung,  will organize an International Conference on “Historical Awareness through Strengthening the National Pillars towards a Smart and Civilized Nation: Shared Experiences of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei Darussalam”.The Conference will be held on May 19-21, 2013 at Singgasana Hotel, Jalan Kajoalaliddo No.16, Makassar City, South Sulawesi, Indonesia.
Reasoning: In the era of globalization, the nation-states still exist. It is one of the paradoxical indications: on one hand, the globalization brings homogeneity, but on other hand, the nation-states preserve their diversities by opposing the mainstream of globalization. Accordingly, one of the critical issues on nation-states – having gained the independents – is how to search, find out, and enhance their characters and identities in the era of globalization based on their national pillars. For Indonesia people, there are currently 4 national pillars i.e. Pancasila (Five Principles), UUD 1945 (Constitution 1945), Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity), and NKRI (Unitary State of the Indonesia Republic); for Malaysia people, there are some national pillars such as Rukun Negara (State Principle), Wawasan 2020 (Vision 2020), and 1Malaysia (One Malaysian); and for Brunei Darussalam people, there is known the MIB (Melayu, Islam, Beraja), Monarch based on Malay and Islamic Values, as national pillar.
The topics of Conference are as follows: (1). Case and comparative studies for strengthening the national pillars towards the smart and civilized nations in Southeast Asian and other regions; (2) History of educational institutions, including theory, methodology, curriculum and assessment in strengthening the national pillars towards the smart and civilized nations; (3) Information and Communication Technology’s literacy: challenges and responses in strengthening the national pillars towards the smart and civilized nations; (4) the Great Malay cultures and Islamic values in facing the mainstream of globalization; (5) Social justice, equity and access in educational and social welfare; and (6) Education as power for strengthening the national pillars towards the smart and civilized nations.
