Visa and Research Permit Processes for Indonesians

Visa applicants in Indonesia may apply for a visa to the United States at the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta or at the U.S. Consulate in Surabaya. Typically Indonesian scholars will use either a J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa, or a B1/B2 Visitor Visa. Non-US citizens traveling to the United States on AIFIS-managed donor funds should coordinate with their host institution to discuss the appropriate visa to apply for.

AIFIS grantees must enroll in a health and accident insurance program in order to receive AIFIS fellowship funding for research travel. It is also a requirement for J-1 visa appliations. The U.S. government places critically important emphasis on the secure and proper administration of Exchange Visitor (J visa) Programs and adherence by Recipients and sponsors to all regulations governing the J visa.

A copy of the complete regulations governing the administration of Exchange Visitor (J) programs is available at https://id.usembassy.gov/visas/nonimmigrant-visas/

Please send an estimated timetable for carrying out your research. While you are in the United States, we would appreciate receiving an interim report on the progress of your research. We expect you to be in touch with the AIFIS staff and make a presentation in the U.S. and in Indonesia on your research findings. AIFIS staff in Indonesia will be able to arrange your presentation when you’re back in Indonesia.

The final report on your research should reach us no later than 30 days after your research concludes.
