Research Permit and Visa Information for FOREIGN RESEARCHERS*

Researchers from other countries are welcome to carry out research in Indonesia in accordance with Indonesian regulations (Undang-Undang Nomor 11 Tahun 2019) and ethical guidelines. All foreign scholars who plan to conduct research in Indonesia are required to secure both a research permit (Surat Ijin Penelitian) and a research visa (E29) before their arrival in Indonesia. There are two central offices needed to interact with in order to attain these permissions:

Directorat General of Immigration

National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN)

The research permitting process is administered by the National Research and Innovation Agency (Badan Riset dan Inovasi Nasional, BRIN). All foreign researchers are required to go through an ethical review process before securing research permits and research visas to travel to Indonesia.

Please review the following application guidelines for detailed information about the ethical clearance process.

Foreign Research Visa

Applications for foreign research visas are managed by the Directorate General of Immigration, which operates under the Ministry of Law and Human Rights. This process requires close collaboration with a host institution / guarantor / research counterpart based in Indonesia who will submit the visa application on behalf of the researcher.

Please review the following quick guide created by AIFIS to assist foreign scholars in attaining the appropriate research permits and visas.

Please note that conducting research in Indonesia without proper research permissions can result in a penalty of a hefty fine, a potential ban on future research permits for up to five years, and in severe cases, a prison sentence of up to two years depending on the severity of the violation.
