Visa Processes for Indonesian Scholars to the United States

Visa applicants in Indonesia may apply for a visa to the United States at the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta or at the U.S. Consulate in Surabaya. Typically Indonesian scholars will use either a J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa, or a B1/B2 Visitor Visa for Tourism.*

The J-1 Scholar Visa provides opportunities for international candidates looking to travel and gain experience in the United States. The program enables foreign nationals to come to the U.S. to teach, study, conduct research, demonstrate special skills or receive on the job training for periods ranging from a few weeks to several years.

The B-1 visa is for a visitor coming temporarily to the United States to participate in scientific, educational, professional or business conventions, conferences, or seminars. The B-2 visa is generally for pleasure or medical treatment.

*Non-US citizens traveling to the United States on AIFIS-managed donor funds should coordinate with their host institution to discuss the appropriate visa to apply.
