The United States-Indonesia Society is organizing a forum looking at foreign policy issues facing Jokowi as he enters his second term. The forum will be led by Donald K. Emmerson, Senior Fellow Emeritus with the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies and Director of the Southeast Asia Program Stanford University, and Evan A. Laksmana, Senior Researcher at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Jakarta. For more information and registration visit the USINDO website.

Indonesian Cultural Caravan 2019

The Indonesian Cultural Caravan consists of 27 of Junior and Senior High School students, parents, and teachers. Students will present Sundanese Gamelan (Salendro) pieces as well as traditional dances such as Giring-giring dance from Kalimantan, Sundanese Merak dance, and Lenggang Nyai dance from Betawi. They will also visit college campuses that students may wish to attend in the future. The group’s mission is to preserve Gamelan Performance as a world heritage by performing on the world stage.

For more information contact Niken Wulandari Singgih, who is the Head of the Cultural Program at Sekolah Bogor Raya in West Java. See a sample of the kids performing here. The director of the group invites members of the local gamelans on their tour schedule to join in during the performances.

The Conference on Asian Linguistic Anthropology 2020

The conference on Asian Linguistic Anthropology (CALA) is organizing an international conference in Malaysia at the University Putra Malaysia Bintulu Campus from February 5-8, 2020. Organized to provide new venues for understandings Asian languages and cultures, CALA is still accepting proposals for conference papers. For more information visit the CALA website.

The 7th International Symposium of Journal Antropologi Indonesia

Between July 23-26, 2019, AIFIS helped sponsor the 7th International Symposium of the Journal Anthropologi Indonesia (ISJAI). The title of the conference this year was “The Use and Abuse of Diversity : Anthropological Responses to the Threat of Disintegration.” ISJAI is the biggest and well-known international conference of anthropology in Indonesia. It is an event initiated and hosted by Jurnal Antropologi Indonesia, a journal published by Department of Anthropology, Universitas Indonesia since 1969 (formerly name Berita Antropologi, 1969-1989).

In his conference address, Dr. Dave Lumenta representing Jurnal Antropologi Indonesia explained that 2019 is an important marker in the development of Indonesian social and political history. The symposium included a number of prominent speakers from around the world, including Webb Keane, Ph.D. from the University of Michigan; Anna Tsing, Ph.D. from the University of California Santa Cruz; Irwan Abdullah, Ph.D. from Universitas Gadjah Mada; Nurul Ilmi Idrus, Ph.D. from Universitas Hasanuddin; and Syed Farid Alatas, Ph.D. from National University of Singapore.

International Consortium for Social Development (ICSD)

This July, AIFIS helped to sponsor the 21st Biennal International Conference of International Consortium for Social Development, ICSD. The conference was held between July 16-19, 2019, at Universitas Gadjah Mada in Yogyakarta. The title of the conference this year was“Strengthening Social Development to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals,” and included speakers and participants from across Indonesia, Australia, and the United States.

Workshop: Academic Writing Workshop for International Publication

Between July 8-10, AIFIS held our third workshop on academic writing for publication. Held at Atma Jaya Catholic University in Jakarta and with support from the Henry Luce Foundation, the workshop brought together American and Indonesian academics, and provided information to help Indonesian scholars publish in peer-reviewed, international academic journals. The workshop brought together over a 100 different scholars from the two countries, and was part of an ongoing effort by AIFIS to connection Indonesian scholars to a global community of writers and researchers.
