Fellow's Report: Desi Adhariani

Desi Adhariani, PhD, is a lecturer and researcher in the Department of Accounting, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Indonesia, and a recent AIFIS Fellow. Dr. Adhariani used her AIFIS Fellowship grant to do a collaborative research work at New York University, looking at agricultural practice and sustainability. While working at NYU, she collected and analyzed data on various investment projects in food security in the US, UK, and Canada presented in online mass media. She plans on conducting a comparative study in Indonesia and then providing suggestions for investment opportunities to tackle food insecurity in several areas in Indonesia. Call for Papers: The 22nd Annual Cornell SEAP Graduate Student Conference

Cornell University recently launched a Global Grand Challenge across departments and programs on the theme of Migrations: Researching, Teaching and Building for a World on the Move. For the 22nd annual Southeast Asia Program Graduate Student Conference, we invite submissions that speak broadly and creatively to this theme, and to the engendering of migrations across time and space. The Graduate Student Conference will highlight dynamic research on Southeast Asia carried out by graduate students across disciplines and the globe, united by this common theme. 2020 APSA Democracy and Autocracy Section Awards

The Democracy and Autocracy Section of the American Political Science Association will present five awards for scholarly work at the 2020 APSA annual meeting: the Juan Linz Prize for Best Dissertation, and the Best Book, Best Article, Best Field Work, and Best Paper awards. Members are strongly encouraged to submit nominations (self-nominations are allowed for some of the awards; see below) to the appropriate committees listed below. Please forward this information to colleagues and graduate students. Please note the eligibility criteria, deadlines for submissions, and materials that must accompany nominations. Luce Foundation Grant to Support Research on Islam

AIFIS Board Member and Winship Distinguished Research Professor of Religion in Emory College of Arts and Sciences, James Hoesterey was recently awarded a very prestigious grant from the Henry Luce Foundation. Hoesterey will lead a cross-cultural and multidisciplinary study on “moderate Islam.” The project will include field interviews and analysis of Islamic social media platforms, with several separate studies combined into a single academic volume and final report, including policy suggestions concerning religious diplomacy. Performing Indonesia

On Sunday October 6, Indonesian guest artists Danis Sugiyanto on violin and vocalist Endah Laras join the American keroncong band Rumput to demonstrate and discuss the traditional string band music of Indonesia and its connection to the arrival of Portuguese sailors and freed slaves to the archipelago in the sixteenth century. This performance is part of the series part “Performing Indonesia” and is presented in cooperation with the Embassy of Indonesia in Washington DC. For more information and ticket prices click here.
